IDFC FIRST Bank profit jumps as provisions decline

Research Analyst: UJVIN NEVATIA (PROPRIETOR: NEVAT INVESTMENTS) | SEBI Registration No.: INH100009628 IDFC FIRST Bank Limited (

) reported profit after tax of ₹1,045 crore in Q2 FY27, up 196.5% year-on-year from ₹352 crore. Net interest income (NII) increased 21% to ₹6,184 crore. What happened? Operating profit rose 35% year-on-year to ₹2,539 crore. Provisions declined to ₹1,137 crore from ₹1,452 crore in the year-ago quarter, supporting the improvement in profitability. Deposits grew 25.9% to ₹3.49 lakh crore, while loans and advances increased 30.1% to ₹3.47 lakh crore. Asset quality improved, with gross NPA declining to 1.32% from 1.51% in the previous quarter and net NPA easing to 0.40% from 0.44%. Why does it matter? The results reflect stronger core income, lower provisions and robust balance-sheet growth. However, sustaining loan growth while maintaining deposit quality, funding costs and asset quality remains important. My view The sharp year-on-year profit increase is encouraging, but the comparison also reflects lower provisions. The focus should be on whether core operating performance continues to improve without a deterioration in credit quality. What I am watching next I would track NII growth, deposit mobilisation, net interest margins, credit costs, asset quality and the cost-to-income ratio to assess the sustainability of earnings.
