SBI profit rises 14% as net interest income grows

Research Analyst: UJVIN NEVATIA (PROPRIETOR: NEVAT INVESTMENTS) | SEBI Registration No.: INH100009628 State Bank of India (

SBIN
) reported standalone net profit of ₹23,038 crore in Q2 FY27, up 14.3% year-on-year from ₹20,160 crore. Net interest income (NII) increased approximately 15%, reflecting continued growth in core banking income. What happened? The bank's profit growth was supported by strong loan demand and gains from the sale of a stake in SBI Funds Management. NII growth indicates continued expansion in income from lending activities. However, the contribution from stake-sale gains is important to distinguish from recurring banking operations when assessing the quality of earnings. Why does it matter? SBI's performance reflects healthy growth in its core lending business. At the same time, non-recurring gains can influence quarterly profitability and should not be treated as a consistent source of earnings. My view The quarter reflects a combination of operating growth and additional income from stake sales. The increase in NII is encouraging, but the sustainability of earnings will depend on loan growth, deposit mobilisation, net interest margins and credit costs. What I am watching next I would track NII growth, net interest margins, loan and deposit growth, asset quality, credit costs and the contribution of non-recurring income to profitability.
