HPCL: Strong quarterly recovery, but first-half losses

HINDPETRO
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HINDPETRO) returned to quarterly profitability in Q2 FY27 after a substantial loss in the preceding quarter. However, year-on-year consolidated profit remained lower. Key numbers Consolidated net profit stood at ₹3,625 crore, down approximately 6.1% year-on-year. Consolidated revenue rose approximately 26% to ₹1.38 lakh crore. HPCL had reported a consolidated loss of approximately ₹12,265 crore in Q1 FY27. The company reported a first-half FY27 consolidated loss of approximately ₹8,639 crore. Average gross refining margin for the first half was $27.89 per barrel, compared with $5.95 a year earlier. <Link url="***** title="Source: Moneycontrol"/> What to monitor next Crude oil prices and refining margins. Petrol, diesel and LPG marketing margins. Government compensation and under-recoveries. Whether quarterly profitability can be sustained. My analytical view HPCL’s quarterly recovery is worth watching, but the first-half loss makes it premature to call this a complete earnings turnaround. The sustainability of margins will be more important than a single strong quarter. Risk: Higher crude prices, suppressed retail fuel margins and policy-related uncertainty can cause sharp earnings fluctuations.
