Tata Power Partners With Norway’s Ocean Sun For Solar Tech
Tata Power one of India’s largest integrated power companies, has officially joined forces with Norway-based renewable energy technology innovator, Ocean Sun. This landmark partnership introduces a pioneering, membrane-based floating solar technology to the Indian clean energy landscape.
As the initial phase of this strategic collaboration, both companies will deploy a specialized 300-kWp floating solar pilot project at Tata Power's historical Mulshi reservoir located in Maharashtra. This site will serve as the testing ground for a revolutionary design that fundamentally changes how floating solar plants operate on water bodies.
Unlike traditional floating solar installations that rely on heavy, rigid pontoon structures to hold standard photovoltaic modules, Ocean Sun’s proprietary technology utilizes a thin, flexible polymer membrane. The solar modules are affixed directly to this large, floating protective blanket. By resting flat against the water's surface, the system achieves remarkable structural and thermodynamic advantages.
For India, this pilot represents a critical step forward in expanding renewable energy capacity without intense land acquisition conflicts. As land availability becomes a premium constraint for massive ground-mounted solar farms, utilizing India’s abundant reservoirs, lakes, and coastal waters provides a highly scalable alternative.
