Vedanta has secured two offshore oil and gas blocks
Vedanta Limited, a prominent diversified metal and natural resources player, has significantly strengthened its presence in the Indian energy sector by securing two key offshore hydrocarbon exploration blocks. The company won these exploration blocks under the Government of India’s competitive Discovered Small Field (DSF) Bid Round IV. The new additions allow Vedanta to expand its extensive exploration portfolio specifically within the prolific Krishna Godavari (KG) basin situated off the eastern coast of the country.
According to the official statements, the award comprises two distinct geographical areas: one shallow-water block designated as KG/OSDSF/G1/2025 and one deepwater block designated as KG/DWDSF/GD10/2025. This strategic win aligns closely with the central government’s ongoing national objective called the Samudra Manthan – National Deepwater Exploration Mission. This public mission focuses intently on unlocking India's massive offshore hydrocarbon potential by accelerating the pace of exploration, executing technology deployment, and attracting investments into frontier basins.
Operating primarily under its established upstream brand name, Cairn Oil and Gas, Vedanta holds interests in 43 blocks that cover over 44,000 square kilometres of acreage across various Indian states. The corporate entity boasts substantial reserves, with its gross proved and probable (2P) resources alongside its contingent (2C) resources estimated to stand at approximately 1.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent. While the company already maintains active producing assets across diverse states like Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Assam, these new offshore blocks enhance its developmental pipeline.
