Bharat Coking Coal Q2 : Is the Turnaround Sustainable?
Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (
BHARATCOAL
), a subsidiary of Coal India, returned to profitability in Q2 FY27, with revenue rising 39% year-on-year. However, the decline in first-half production raises an important question: can the company sustain this recovery?
Key Q2 FY27 Highlights
- Net profit: ₹123.74 crore versus a loss of ₹52.99 crore in Q2 FY26.
- Revenue from operations: ₹4,412.58 crore, up 39.1% YoY.
- EBITDA: ₹358.87 crore versus ₹86.65 crore a year ago.
- Raw coal production: 7.22 million tonnes, up 7.6% YoY.
- Coal offtake: 8.89 million tonnes, up 9.6% YoY.
The recovery was supported by higher sales realisations, stronger coking coal prices and increased dispatches. However, production for H1 FY27 declined to 13.78 million tonnes from 15.75 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year.
Why Does It Matter?
The return to profit reflects improved operating performance and favourable realisations. But the decline in first-half production and offtake indicates that operational consistency remains important. Earnings could also be sensitive to changes in global coking coal prices and sales realisations.
My View
BCCL’s Q2 results are encouraging, but one strong quarter is not enough to establish a sustained earnings recovery. Investors should monitor production trends, sales realisations, dispatch volumes and the durability of margins over the coming quarters.
