GAIL Q2 FY27: Profit Rises 8.3% to ₹4,650 Crore

GAIL (

GAIL
) reported a steady improvement in its standalone Q2 FY27 performance, while consolidated profitability recorded a much sharper increase. Key Q2 FY27 Highlights - Standalone net profit: ₹4,650 crore, up 8.3% YoY. - Standalone revenue from operations: ₹45,895 crore, up 17.8% YoY. - Consolidated net profit: ₹4,719.66 crore, up 139.3% YoY. - Consolidated revenue: ₹47,301 crore, up 32.7% YoY. - Consolidated EBITDA: ₹6,412 crore, compared with ₹6,377 crore a year ago, a marginal increase of 0.5%. What Is Driving the Performance? GAIL's natural gas marketing business benefited from higher marketing margins, with operating profit in this segment rising sharply. Gas transmission operating profit also increased, while losses in petrochemicals narrowed significantly. However, the improvement in marketing margins was partly linked to global energy supply disruptions following the West Asia crisis. This makes the sustainability of these earnings an important factor to monitor. GAIL's board has given in-principle approval for an IPO of its wholly owned subsidiary, GAIL Gas, involving dilution of up to 25% of its stake. The company has also approved the transfer of six city gas distribution areas to GAIL Gas, effective January 1, 2027. This could provide a separate valuation opportunity for the city gas distribution business. My View GAIL's results are positive, but I would look beyond the headline profit growth. The consolidated earnings improvement was largely supported by higher gas marketing margins, while consolidated EBITDA remained almost flat year-on-year. The proposed GAIL Gas IPO is an important development because it could unlock value from the subsidiary and bring greater visibility to its city gas distribution operations.
