Jio Platforms IPO: ₹2.5 Lakh Cr Demand and Valuation Risks

Jio Platforms IPO Draws ₹2.5 Lakh Crore in Bids — Is the Hype Justified? Jio Platforms’ ₹30,200-crore IPO has attracted institutional bids worth approximately ₹2.5 lakh crore, setting a record for an Indian IPO’s anchor book demand. Global asset managers, sovereign wealth funds, domestic mutual funds and insurers have shown strong interest ahead of the public issue opening on October 21.

RELIANCE
Key IPO Details - Issue size: approximately ₹30,200 crore. - Price band: ₹1,065–₹1,119 per share. - Anchor book: around ₹8,110 crore, with demand exceeding 30 times the shares on offer. - Investors include BlackRock, Fidelity, GIC, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, LIC and leading Indian mutual funds. - The IPO is entirely a fresh issue, with no offer-for-sale component. Jio plans to use ₹27,500 crore of the proceeds to repay or prepay borrowings. - At the upper price band, the company’s estimated post-issue market capitalisation is around ₹10.3 lakh crore. My View Strong institutional demand signals confidence in Jio’s scale, digital ecosystem and long-term growth potential. However, anchor-book demand should not be confused with guaranteed listing gains or evidence that the IPO is attractively valued. At the upper price band, broker estimates place the valuation at roughly 32–34 times FY26 earnings. Retail investors should assess earnings growth, cash-flow generation, debt reduction and the sustainability of future monetisation before making an investment decision. Jio’s IPO could be a landmark event for India’s capital markets, but the right question is not simply how many institutions want the shares—it is whether the business can deliver enough growth to justify the price.
