Amrutanjan Healthcare: Strong Moat, Weak Momentum?

AMRUTANJAN
Amrutanjan Health Care is a consumer-healthcare business with a strong balance sheet. Its century-old balm brand, low debt and high return on capital make it interesting for shareholders. But the latest numbers show that the core business is slowing, while a large new investment is yet to prove its value. The company has made its ayurvedic pain balm since 1893. In FY26, sales rose 11% to ₹503 crore, while net profit was ₹58 crore. ROCE stood at 25%, roughly twice the industry median. Borrowings were only ₹2 crore against reserves of ₹367 crore. The biggest strategic move is a ₹150crore greenfield sanitary-napkin plant in Telangana. Women’s hygiene sales rose 27% to ₹36.36 crore in Q1 FY27. However, the core OTC business is the concern for investors seeking steady growth. OTC sales were ₹57.26 crore in Q1 FY27, growing just 0.5%. Overall quarterly sales increased 9.5% to ₹102.97 crore, but operating margin fell to 6.1% from 9.0%. Profit after tax dropped 47.7% to ₹4.37 crore, partly due to a one-time lease-rent impact. The stock had fallen about 35% over a year and traded at around 23 times earnings, below its industry and historical averages. The correction offers some comfort, especially with a sound balance sheet and FY26 dividend of ₹4.90 per share. Yet the ₹150crore capex creates execution risk. Free cash flow turned negative by ₹19 crore in FY26, and the new plant must generate adequate returns. If Comfy scales and core brands recover, shareholders could benefit from operating leverage and a valuation re-rating. If balm growth remains weak, the investment may depress returns. Overall, Amrutanjan is financially sound, but not a straightforward growth story. The opportunity is real, but shareholders should watch margins, cash flow, plant utilisation and whether new capacity earns attractive returns before expecting strong returns.!
