Central Bank of India profit rises 21% in Q2 FY27

Research Analyst: UJVIN NEVATIA (PROPRIETOR: NEVAT INVESTMENTS) | SEBI Registration No.: INH100009628 Central Bank of India (

CENTRALBK
) reported a 21.1% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit to ₹1,469 crore in Q2 FY27, supported by strong growth in core banking income. What happened? Net interest income (NII) increased 26.3% to ₹4,146 crore. Operating profit rose 26.9% to ₹2,268 crore, while net interest margin improved to 3.01% from 2.89% a year earlier. Total advances grew 30% year-on-year to ₹3.81 lakh crore. Asset quality also improved, with the net non-performing asset ratio declining to 0.31% from 0.48%. However, non-interest income fell 6.1% to ₹1,380 crore, partly reflecting a decline in treasury income. Why does it matter? Higher NII and loan growth indicate stronger core banking performance. Improving asset quality is another positive sign. However, declining non-interest income highlights that earnings can still be affected by treasury operations and other revenue sources. My view The results show healthy growth in lending and core income alongside improved asset quality. Sustaining this momentum will depend on managing credit risk and maintaining margins as the loan book expands. What I am watching next I would track loan growth, net interest margins, deposit mobilisation, credit costs and asset quality to assess whether profitability remains sustainable. 🏦 CENTRAL BANK OF INDIA — GROWTH IS BACK ON THE RADAR!

CENTRALBK
The real opportunity in PSU banks isn’t just lending more — it’s turning growth into sustainable profitability. 📊 The latest business update is worth watching. Central Bank of India reported provisional total business of ₹8.90 lakh crore in Q2 FY27, up 20.55% YoY. 💰 Total deposits reached ₹5.09 lakh crore, growing 14.43%. 🚀 Gross advances climbed to ₹3.81 lakh crore, surging 29.83% YoY. Lending growth is running substantially ahead of deposit growth — a trend investors should monitor for its impact on funding costs and liquidity. 🔍 WHAT COULD DRIVE THE NEXT LEG? ✅ Credit expansion: A growing loan book can support interest income if underwriting remains disciplined. ✅ PSU banking opportunity: Improving asset quality and operating efficiency across public-sector banks can support profitability. ✅ Execution matters: The next financial results will reveal whether rapid business growth translates into stronger net interest income, profits and returns on assets. ⚠️ WHAT CAN GO WRONG? Fast loan growth does not automatically mean higher earnings. Deposit costs, net interest margins, slippages, credit provisions and valuation remain key risks. 🎯 THE BOTTOM LINE Central Bank of India has delivered strong provisional business growth — but the investment case must ultimately be validated by earnings and asset quality. Watch the profit trajectory, not just the loan-book trajectory. Figures include provisional Q2 FY27 business data; they are not a buy recommendation. Assess valuation, risk and suitability before investing.

Could Higher Rates Support PSU Bank Margins?

Imagine the RBI raising the repo rate by 25 bps. For borrowers, loan costs may rise. But for some banks, the story can be different. 8 of 10 economists expected the RBI to raise the repo rate by 25 bps to 5.50%** at the October policy meeting. Rising crude prices, higher inflation risks and resilient economic growth are key factors behind these expectations. The interesting part is **loan repricing**. Many PSU banks have a significant portion of their Retail, Agriculture and MSME (RAM) loans linked to external benchmarks such as the repo rate. When the repo rate changes, these lending rates can reprice relatively quickly, while deposit costs may adjust with a lag. This can temporarily support Net Interest Margins (NIMs). 📌 **Nifty 500 stocks to study for this theme:** •

(SBI) • Bank of Baroda (BANKBARODA) • Canara Bank (CANBK) • Indian Bank (INDIANB) • Bank of India (BANKINDIA) • Punjab National Bank (PNB) • Union Bank of India (UNIONBANK) • Central Bank of India (CENTRALBK) The key lesson is simple: **a rate hike does not automatically mean every bank will benefit.** Investors should study loan composition, deposit costs, NIM trends, asset quality and credit growth before drawing conclusions. This is an **educational sector study, not a recommendation to buy or sell any security.** **20-Word Learning Takeaway:** Understanding loan repricing, deposit costs and NIMs helps investors evaluate how changing interest rates can affect banking profitability. **Educational disclaimer:** This post is for learning purposes only and should not be construed as investment advice, research recommendation, or a buy/sell/hold call. Central Bank of India: a 3.8% yield at 0.7 times book

CENTRALBK
Central Bank of India (NSE: CENTRALBK) paid ₹1.19 per share in dividends across FY26, the first sustained payout after nearly a decade of silence. At ₹30.39, that is a yield of about 3.8%. What happened Q1 FY27 standalone net profit rose 13.3% to ₹1,324 crore. Net interest income grew 15.7% to ₹3,914 crore. Gross advances rose 28.6% to ₹3,54,348 crore. Gross NPA improved to 2.60% from 3.13% a year ago. Net NPA held at 0.49%. The government holds 89.27%. Why it matters For years, Central Bank was the PSU bank you avoided. Gross NPA had crossed 20% in FY19, profits vanished, and dividends stopped. That is why the stock still trades at about 0.7 times book even though the cleanup is largely done. My view There are two stories. The bank cleaned up, returned to profit, and started paying dividends. That is real. But operating profit fell 5.1% while headline net profit rose 13.3%. The difference was taxes, not a better business. Strip it out and the improvement is thin. The 3.8% yield is also built on thin ice. Total FY26 dividends of ₹1.19 a share came from ₹4,369 crore of reported profit. The payout ratio is 27%, manageable. But if credit costs rise or NIM compresses, the comfort of that ratio shrinks fast. At 6.2 times earnings and 0.7 times book, the stock looks cheap. The discount reflects government ownership, weak return on equity of about 12%, and no track record of sustained dividends. What I am watching Q2 FY27 results in October, operating profit growth turning positive, and the NIM trend. On the chart, ₹29.35 is the 52-week low and ₹40.91 is the high. My stance: Buy for yield only near ₹30. Size it small. This is income, not a growth bet. Disclosure: I do not hold a position in Central Bank of India at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.

Central Bank of India: Cheap Valuation, But Can Profits Catch Up?

CENTRALBK
Central Bank of India is gradually emerging as an attractive value play among PSU banks, but whether its improving fundamentals translate into a sustained re-rating remains the key question for shareholders. The stock trades at around 0.8x FY26 book value, below the PSU banking median of 1.0x, while offering a healthy 3.7% dividend yield. This provides downside support for long-term investors, though the valuation discount reflects lingering concerns over earnings quality. FY26 performance was steady. Net interest income rose 2% to ₹14,171 crore, while net profit increased 15.4% to ₹4,369 crore, despite a one-time deferred tax charge of ₹632 crore. The stronger profit growth suggests underlying operating performance is improving. The biggest positive is robust credit growth. Gross advances climbed 18.8% to ₹3.4 lakh crore, led by retail, agriculture and MSME loans, which together grew 21%. Retail loans surged 25.7% to over ₹1 lakh crore, improving the mix towards diversified, higher-yielding segments. Management expects 14–16% loan growth and 10–12% deposit growth in FY27. It also plans to strengthen corporate banking, recruit over 900 officers, invest nearly ₹2,700 crore in technology and expansion, and scale up wealth management, forex and digital businesses. Asset quality continues to improve, with gross NPA at 2.67%, net NPA at 0.49%, and the slippage ratio declining to 1.16%. ROE stands at 11.9%, reflecting a healthier franchise than in previous years. For shareholders, the positives are attractive valuation, improving asset quality and strong credit growth. However, slower NII growth, margin pressure and continued investor scepticism could keep the stock trading below peers. Overall, it appears better suited for patient, long-term investors than those seeking a quick re-rating.
