Equitas SFB may raise FY27 loan growth guidance above 25%

EQUITASBNK
Equitas Small Finance Bank is poised to upgrade its full-year advances growth guidance to over 25% following a strong first half, while anticipating minimal disruption from the widespread drought in Maharashtra. The lender initially projected a 20% expansion in advances for the current financial year, 2026-27 (FY27). However, the April-June quarter of 2026 (Q1FY27) growth reached 28%, and the momentum has continued into the July-September quarter of 2026 (Q2FY27). Asset quality metrics are also tracking ahead of initial estimates. The bank guided for a full-year credit cost of 1.5%, but recorded just 1.36% in the first quarter, typically the weakest period for collections. Full-year credit costs are now expected to fall below the 1.5% mark. While net interest margins, which stood at 7.24% in the first quarter, face a projected 15 basis point compression due to higher deposit rates, this will be offset by lower credit costs and reduced operating expenses. Consequently, the bank expects to comfortably exceed its target of a 1.2% return on assets for the full year and a 1.5% exit rate in the fourth quarter. Addressing the recent declaration of drought across 74% of Maharashtra, affecting 265 of the state's 358 talukas, the management sees limited risk to the loan book. Equitas does not issue direct agricultural loans, relying instead on its microfinance portfolio to meet priority sector lending requirements.

Equitas SFB Removes Major Legal Overhang

Equitas Small Finance Bank Limited (EQUITASBNK) announced a 95.51% reduction in a proposed GST demand for FY22–23. Following a personal hearing on September 25, 2026, the tax authorities revised the proposed assessment from ₹533.81 crore to ₹23.95 crore. The decision follows the bank's clarification that interest income on core loans and advances is statutory-exempt from GST. This update averts a potential ₹509.86 crore risk to the bank's balance sheet and net worth. A financial hit cannot be reliably quantified for the remaining ₹23.95 crore until final adjudication, but the maximum remaining impact is capped at ~13% of single-quarter PAT. The bank will produce further documentary evidence to contest the balance demand. The key risk remains any potential reopening of similar tax claims for subsequent fiscal years. The removal of this overhang restores confidence in book value preservation.

Equitas Small Finance Bank Ltd Company Analysis

EQUITASBNK
Equitas Small Finance Bank is a retail-focused small finance bank with a diversified lending franchise spanning small-business loans, microfinance, housing finance, used commercial and passenger vehicles, gold loans and other retail banking products. The bank has been steadily reducing its dependence on the MFI segment by expanding its non-MFI portfolio, while simultaneously growing deposits and its CASA base. FY26 marked a significant recovery, with the bank reporting ₹103 crore PAT for the full year and Q4 PAT of ₹213 crore, up 406% YoY. Gross advances grew 22% YoY, while deposits increased 8%; Q4 NIM improved to 7.29% and cost of funds declined to 6.94%. The improvement continued in Q1 FY27, when gross advances increased 27% YoY and disbursements surged 93% to ₹6,784 crore. PAT reached ₹184 crore compared with a ₹224 crore loss in Q1 FY26, while ROA and ROE were 1.18% and 11.76%, respectively. The bank maintained a healthy CRAR of 19.44% and LCR of 178.46%. The key growth drivers are continued expansion of small-business lending, housing finance, vehicle loans and gold loans, alongside deposit mobilisation and improving asset quality. Groww currently shows 1-year TTM revenue growth of about 14% and a 3-year revenue CAGR of 18%, although the 3-year profit CAGR remains negative because of the sharp earnings weakness in the preceding period. The major risks remain credit costs, asset-quality deterioration, MFI exposure, operating costs and the ability to sustain recent profitability as the loan book expands. Overall, Equitas is showing a substantial earnings recovery and stronger loan growth, but the key factor to monitor is whether the FY26–Q1 FY27 improvement represents a sustainable shift in profitability rather than simply a recovery from a weak base.

Equitas Small Finance Bank to consider Tier II fundraise

Equitas Small Finance Bank Limited (

EQUITASBNK
) will consider raising capital through Lower Tier II bonds in a board meeting scheduled for September 16. The bank's shareholders have already approved a broader capital-raising framework, including up to ₹1,250 crore through QIP and up to ₹500 crore through NCDs or bonds. The specific proposal before the board today is the issuance of unsecured, subordinated, transferable and redeemable Lower Tier II bonds through private placement, subject to regulatory approvals. My view For a bank, additional Tier II capital can support balance-sheet growth and regulatory capital requirements. But the amount and pricing of today's issuance matter more than the headline itself. I would watch the final issue size, coupon and investor response. These will indicate the cost of the additional capital and how efficiently Equitas can use it for future growth. Disclosure: I do not hold any position or have any interest in Equitas Small Finance Bank Limited as of the time of posting.

Equitas SFB Board to Consider Tier II Bond Issuance

EQUITASBNK
Equitas Small Finance Bank's board will meet on September 16, 2026, to consider and approve raising capital through unsecured, subordinated, transferable, redeemable, fully paid-up lower Tier II bonds, in the form of non-convertible debentures, on a private placement basis. This is worth understanding as a genuinely different way for a bank to raise capital. 1. Banks are required to maintain a certain level of capital relative to their loans, and this capital is categorized into tiers. Tier I capital is the bank's core, highest-quality capital, mainly equity and reserves. Tier II is supplementary capital, lower in the hierarchy, but still counts toward meeting regulatory capital adequacy requirements. 2. Raising Tier II capital through bonds means borrowing, not selling ownership. Unlike an equity raise, which dilutes existing shareholders, issuing bonds means the bank takes on debt instead, existing shareholders' ownership stays unchanged. 3. "Subordinated" means these bondholders get repaid after other creditors in the event of trouble. This is why subordinated debt like this typically carries a higher interest rate than a bank's regular deposits or senior debt, investors are compensated for standing further back in the repayment line. The takeaway: Not every capital raise dilutes shareholders. A bank choosing Tier II bonds over an equity issuance is specifically choosing debt, meeting regulatory capital requirements without changing who owns the company, a materially different decision than the share-based raises covered in several other posts this month.
