Indian Overseas Bank Q1 Profit Jumps on Strong Income Growth and Better Asset Quality

Research Analyst: UJVIN NEVATIA (PROPRIETOR: NEVAT INVESTMENTS) | SEBI Registration No.: INH100009628

IOB
reported a 49.3% year-on-year increase in net profit to ₹1,659 crore for the first quarter of FY27, compared with ₹1,111 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The strong performance was supported by growth in core lending income, higher non-interest income, and improved operational efficiency. Net Interest Income (NII) increased 6.5% year-on-year to ₹2,747 crore, while operating profit rose 9.7% to ₹2,651 crore. The bank continued to strengthen its balance sheet, with gross advances growing 15.2% year-on-year and total deposits rising 10.8%. Asset quality improved further, with the Gross NPA ratio declining to 1.85% from 2.14% a year earlier, while the Net NPA ratio improved to 0.32% from 0.37%. The Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR) also remained strong at over 98%, reflecting prudent risk management and a healthier loan portfolio. Industry & Economic Impact: The results reflect the continued improvement in India's public sector banking sector, supported by healthy credit growth, stronger recoveries, and declining bad loans. Better asset quality and stable operating performance enable banks to strengthen profitability while expanding lending across retail, MSMEs, agriculture, and corporate sectors. From an economic perspective, stronger public sector banks improve credit availability for businesses and consumers, supporting investment, infrastructure development, and economic growth. Healthy balance sheets and robust capital positions also enhance financial stability, allowing banks to meet increasing credit demand more effectively. Source: The Hindu No Recommendations

IOB
- Underperformer

Indian Overseas Bank remains in a long-term bearish trend, with price continuing to trade below the falling trendline. The recent price action is forming a consolidation near the lower end of the range, but there is no confirmed reversal yet. A decisive breakout above the falling trendline would be the first sign of strength. Until then, the broader trend continues to favor caution.
