₹20,804 CRORE RAILWAY PUSH: FOLLOW THE TRACK, NOT THE HYPE

Imagine a railway line carrying more and more trains every year. At some point, the tracks become crowded. The solution is simple: add more tracks. The Cabinet has approved **8 railway multitracking projects worth ₹20,804 crore** across **9 states and 31 districts**. Around **1,196 km** will be added to the existing network, with completion targeted by 2029-30. The projects are expected to improve capacity, connectivity and freight movement. The projects could create around **74 million tonnes per annum of additional freight capacity**, covering commodities such as coal, cement, iron, steel, automobiles, containers, foodgrains and petroleum products. 📌 **Nifty 500 stocks that could be relevant to this theme:** • **

RVNL
** – railway infrastructure execution • **IRCON International** – railway EPC & infrastructure • **RITES** – railway consultancy & engineering • **Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC)** – railway project financing • **RailTel Corporation** – railway telecom & digital infrastructure • **BEML** – rail and transportation equipment • **Titagarh Rail Systems** – wagons and rolling stock • **Texmaco Rail & Engineering** – freight rail infrastructure and wagons These companies may have different levels of direct or indirect exposure; the announcement itself does **not** guarantee additional orders or earnings. Several of these names are part of the Nifty 500 universe. Government infrastructure spending can create sector-wide opportunities, but investors should study order books, valuations, execution and earnings before deciding. This post is strictly for educational purposes and is **not a stock tip, recommendation, or investment advice**. Do your own research and consult a SEBI-registered investment professional before making investment decisions.

IRFC Remains Trapped in a Persistent Downtrend

IRFC
continues to sit within the broader railway and infrastructure-financing theme, where long-term policy support and sustained public capex remain important structural drivers. But the stock itself has been in a prolonged de-rating phase after the sharp railway-led rally of 2024, and the current chart still reflects persistent supply rather than accumulation. Price is near ₹82 and remains below both the 20-day average around ₹85 and the 50-day average near ₹87.5. More importantly, both averages are sloping lower and the stock continues to form a sequence of lower highs and lower lows. That keeps the primary trend decisively weak. The immediate ₹80–82 region is now the first area where buyers need to show meaningful defence. A sustained break below this zone can extend the decline toward lower historical support bands. On the upside, the first real sign of improvement would come only after price reclaims the ₹85–88 cluster and begins holding above it. Until then, the railway-financing theme may remain structurally relevant, but IRFC’s chart is still signalling weakness and any bounce should be treated as a recovery attempt inside a broader downtrend.

Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) delivered a strong

IRFC
Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) delivered a strong Q1 FY27, with PAT rising 10.4% YoY to ₹1,927 crore and revenue from operations increasing 19.5% to ₹8,261 crore. AUM stood at ₹4.79 lakh crore, while net worth reached a record ₹58,792 crore. Importantly, IRFC continues to maintain a zero-NPA loan book, which is a major strength for the company. The bigger growth story is “IRFC 2.0”, where the company is gradually diversifying beyond traditional railway financing into areas such as metro, high-speed rail, freight corridors and other railway-linked infrastructure. Management is targeting ₹50,000+ crore of annual disbursements over the coming years, with a pipeline of nearly ₹92,800 crore already identified for future disbursement.

A strong positive trigger for railway stocks would be a fresh acceleration in railway capex and actual order execution—especially new tenders/orders for Vande Bharat trains, locomotives, wagons, signalling, track doubling, Dedicated Freight Corridors, high-speed rail and station modernisation. The government has already budgeted about ₹2.93 lakh crore railway capex for FY27, while today’s Cabinet approval of around ₹9,450 crore of railway multitracking projects is a near-term positive signal for the sector. The biggest rerating trigger, however, would be large order inflows translating into faster revenue/profit growth and better margins for companies such as RVNL, IRCON, Titagarh, Jupiter Wagons and railway-electrical suppliers.

Government PSU stake sales

* The government has significantly stepped up disinvestment in 2026, using the Offer for Sale (OFS) route to monetise minority holdings in listed PSUs. The move is aimed at raising non-tax revenue, supporting fiscal consolidation and easing pressure on government finances, particularly amid higher expenditure and elevated crude-oil prices. PSU stake sales through OFS in 2026 had reached an 11-year high, according to market reporting. * Key PSUs where the government has sold stakes include:

COALINDIA
, NHPC, General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC), Central Bank of India, Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC), Cochin Shipyard, and NLC India. The government also completed strategic disinvestment of Indian Medicines Pharmaceutical Corporation (IMPCL).
