Digging Below Mumbai: The Hidden Engineering Story That Could Benefit Indian Companies

Mega infrastructure projects create long-term opportunities for engineering, construction, cement, capital goods and rail companies supporting India's growth. When most people see the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train, they think about speed. But the real story is unfolding deep below Mumbai. Imagine a machine longer than a football field, taller than a four-storey building, and weighing over 3,000 tonnes. Instead of moving above the ground, it is slowly carving India's first undersea railway tunnel beneath the Thane Creek. This isn't just construction. It's a lesson in engineering, planning and risk management. Unlike roads, high-speed trains cannot take sharp turns or steep slopes. Mumbai's dense buildings, roads and utilities leave almost no space on the surface. The only practical solution is to go underground. But digging underground is never straightforward. Engineers study rocks and soil using boreholes and seismic surveys, yet they can never see the entire underground. Every metre of tunnelling carries uncertainty. Unexpected rock formations, water-bearing soil or geological faults can change costs, timelines and execution. That's why project planning and risk allocation become just as important as engineering. For investors, these mega projects create opportunities across multiple sectors—not only the company building the tunnel. • Larsen & Toubro (L&T)

LT
– EPC, tunnelling and infrastructure execution • Siemens India
SIEMENS
– Rail electrification and signalling technologies • UltraTech Cement – Large-scale cement demand • JK Lakshmi Cement – Construction material demand • Cummins India
CUMMINSIND
– Equipment powering heavy construction The biggest winners from India's infrastructure story may not always be the companies in the headlines. Sometimes, they are the businesses quietly supplying machines, cement, electrical systems and engineering expertise behind every kilometre built.
