As per the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), car retail sales saw a rise of 7.7% in 2025 due to heightened consumer demand in the latter half of the year. A rise in consumer demand and a positive economic environment resulted in a notable boost in auto sales in the final quarter of 2025 compared to the initial quarter of 2025. The increase in demand was mainly fueled by enhanced sales during the festive season and better product availability due to the lifting of most current supply chain limitations in the industry. Along with robust sales, FADA noted that the rise in demand showcased elevated consumer confidence regarding future economic conditions, leading to increased overall vehicle acquisitions across various categories, despite a sluggish beginning to the year for new vehicle sales. In the latter part of 2025, progress in technology and enhanced sales strategies led to a rise in consumer traffic and a related boost in sales conversion rates for dealers. Multiple factors at play comprised the introduction of new products, competitive pricing tactics, and improved financing options accessible to consumers in both city and countryside regions. FADA indicates that the consistent increase in retail vehicle sales reaffirms the robustness of India’s automotive sector and reflects its ongoing capacity to adjust to changing market conditions. In general, the ongoing rebound in auto retail sales reflects a sustained rise in consumer interest in vehicles, which is likely to maintain a positive environment for automotive producers and sellers.

Rapid Growth in Used-Car Market

CARTRADE
PVSL
The used-car market in India is projected to grow by 8–10% in FY26, outpacing the growth rate of new car sales. Used-car sales volume is expected to exceed 6 million units in FY26, with the used-to-new car sales ratio rising to 1.4 from less than 1 five years ago. The estimated market value of used cars is around ₹4 trillion, nearly matching the value of new car sales. Key factors fueling this growth include affordability concerns, digital platforms, and improved access to financing. Organised used-car players are expected to break even operationally in 12–18 months, but liquidity and funding remain crucial due to ongoing high costs in logistics, refurbishment, and customer acquisition.
