India’s total outstanding private capital expenditure (capex) pipeline reached ₹99.70 lakh crore ($1.05 trillion) in September 2026, registering a 39% year-on-year expansion and growing to roughly 4.1 times its March 2014 level, according to a report by Union Bank of India. The capex pipeline expanded by ₹46.40 lakh crore ($488.16 billion) over the past two years alone, compared to an increase of ₹7 lakh crore ($73.65 billion) across the eight-year period ending March 2022. While the overall value surged, the total project count grew by only 50% to 5,311, driving the average project size up 2.7 times to ₹1,878 crore ($197.58 million). Manufacturing and electricity form the bedrock of this investment wave, accounting for ₹41.30 lakh crore ($434.51 billion) and ₹32.20 lakh crore ($338.77 billion) respectively—together representing 74% of the total pipeline—while the services sector registered the fastest overall growth at 347%. The report underscored heavy sectoral and geographic concentration, with power generation, IT/ITES, metals, and chemicals together accounting for 80% of total planned investments, and ITES alongside conventional power contributing 87% of the annual increment. Geographically, Maharashtra’s share expanded from 9% in 2014 to 29% by September 2026, with the top five states encompassing 68% of the total pipeline and 21 state-industry clusters representing 59%. However, Union Bank of India cautioned that planned announcements could outpace on-ground project execution, noting an 87% surge in planned investment values against a modest 18% increase in project volume over two years. The analysis also flagged a critical lag in power transmission infrastructure relative to generation capacity additions, citing project concentration, large deal sizes, and potential execution bottlenecks as key risk factors for institutional lenders.

Union Bank of India delivered a strong performance in Q2FY27, supported by robust core income growth, expanding credit demand and declining bad loans. Standalone net profit increased 30.31% YoY to ₹5,537 crore against ₹4,249 crore in Q2FY26, while Net Interest Income (NII) grew 20.09% to ₹10,583 crore. Net Interest Margin (NIM) improved to 2.86% from 2.67% a year earlier. Business Growth & Asset Quality: Global advances increased 18.53% YoY to ₹11.56 lakh crore, outpacing deposit growth of 6.87% to ₹13.19 lakh crore. The Gross NPA ratio declined to 2.42% from 3.29%, while Net NPA improved to 0.42% from 0.55%. Return on Assets stood at 1.38%, reflecting improved profitability and operating efficiency. Key Risks: Non-interest income declined 6.90% YoY to ₹4,651 crore, primarily due to weaker treasury income. Sustaining credit growth, protecting margins and managing deposit costs remain critical to future earnings. Fundamental Outlook: The outlook remains cautiously positive, supported by healthy loan growth, rising core earnings and improving asset quality. Investors should monitor NIM sustainability, deposit mobilisation and credit costs. A sustained improvement in profitability could strengthen the bank’s long-term fundamental profile; however, valuation and market price trends must be assessed before making an investment decision.
