BBTC
Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation Ltd (BBTC), part of the Wadia Group, is a diversified holding company with interests across plantations, auto components and healthcare. Its businesses include tea plantations, auto-electrical components through group companies and healthcare-related investments. The diversified structure gives BBTC exposure to multiple sectors, while its substantial investments and subsidiaries can provide value beyond the earnings generated by its core plantation operations.
Financial performance has been strong on a consolidated basis. Revenue increased from ₹4,784 crore in June 2025 to ₹5,157 crore in June 2026, while EBITDA remained substantial at ₹887 crore. However, June 2026 net profit declined 25.4% year-on-year to ₹583 crore despite the revenue increase, and operating margin reduced from 21.0% in September 2025 to 17.8% in June 2026. On a longer-term basis, revenue has grown at around 5% CAGR over three years, while profit growth has been much stronger at approximately 74% CAGR, although this figure should be interpreted carefully because BBTC's earnings can be influenced by subsidiary performance and other non-operating factors.
The most striking aspect of BBTC is its valuation. At around ₹1,422, the stock trades at a trailing P/E of only about 3.8 and a price-to-book ratio of approximately 1.4, while ROE is around 17.7% and debt-to-equity only 0.23. This makes the stock look inexpensive on conventional earnings metrics, although the low P/E also reflects the complexity of its holding-company structure and the need to assess the quality and sustainability of consolidated earnings. Looking ahead, value unlocking from subsidiaries, continued performance of the auto-components business and improvement in plantation operations could support returns. However, investors should examine the underlying asset value, inter-company structures and cash flows rather than relying solely on the headline P/E.#FundamentalViews#StockInNews#EquityResearch#HiddenGems#WatchOutFor
