CPR (Central Pivot Range) – The Intraday Trader’s Edge

CPR or Central Pivot Range is one of the most reliable tools used by intraday traders to identify potential price zones, market sentiment, and possible breakout levels. It is derived from the previous day’s price action and consists of three levels: the pivot point (central line), the top central pivot (TC), and the bottom central pivot (BC). Together, these three levels form a zone that can act as support, resistance, or a decision-making area for day traders, especially in fast-moving instruments like Nifty and Bank Nifty options. The primary use of CPR is to understand the expected market behavior for the current trading day. If the price opens and stays above the CPR, it generally signals bullish sentiment. If it opens and trades below CPR, it indicates a bearish tone. When the price remains within the CPR zone, it reflects indecision and a likely sideways or range-bound market. This simple observation can help intraday option traders decide whether to adopt a buying, selling, or wait-and-watch approach. Professional traders also use CPR in confluence with other indicators like VWAP, Supertrend, or moving averages to build stronger conviction. For instance, if price breaks above both CPR and VWAP with strong volume, it is a more reliable bullish sign than CPR alone. Also, higher time-frame CPRs like weekly or monthly can act as stronger zones that influence intraday behavior. In fast-paced option trading, where timing is everything, CPR provides a simple, rule-based framework to avoid emotional trades and stay focused on key zones. It helps in anticipating market moves rather than reacting to them. Over time, traders who understand and practice CPR concepts develop better entry precision, SL placement, and trade confidence. It doesn’t guarantee success, but it surely builds consistency, which is the most important factor in intraday trading.
