Five-Star Business Finance Ltd — Stock Report

FIVESTAR
Five-Star Business Finance Ltd is a Chennai-based non-banking financial company (NBFC) that provides secured business and mortgage loans to micro-entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals. Its main customers include small shop owners, masons, and vendors who often lack access to traditional banking services. The company has a strong presence in southern India and is expanding into states such as Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. The company has shown strong and consistent growth over the past few years. Its Assets Under Management (AUM) have grown at a healthy 20–30% compound annual growth rate, driven by steady branch expansion and rising demand for small business financing. As of March 2025, Five-Star operated about 748 branches across India. For the quarter ended March 2025, the company reported around 23% year-on-year growth in total income, with profit before tax and profit after tax increasing about 18%. Return on equity (ROE) remained robust near 18%, reflecting efficient capital use. One of Five-Star’s biggest strengths lies in its focus on secured loans backed by self-occupied residential properties. This reduces credit risk compared to unsecured lending and ensures stronger recovery rates. The company’s typical loan ticket size ranges between ₹1 lakh and ₹10 lakh, with repayment tenures extending up to seven years—making the product affordable and sustainable for small borrowers. Its customer base in semi-urban and rural areas gives it access to a vast underserved segment of India’s economy. However, challenges remain. The company faces margin compression due to recent declines in lending yields—nearly 200 basis points lower since late 2024—which may reduce net interest margins in the coming years.
