FLAG PATTERN: PART 2

How the Flag Forms: 1. Flagpole (Initial Impulse Move): The pattern begins with a strong move in a single direction, either up (bullish) or down (bearish). This strong price movement is called the flagpole. It often occurs on high volume, indicating strong momentum. 2. Flag (Consolidation Phase): After the flagpole, the price moves sideways or slightly against the prevailing trend in a narrow range, forming the flag. This consolidation may form a rectangular shape, and the trendlines of the flag will either be parallel or slope slightly against the direction of the flagpole. 3. Breakout: The pattern is confirmed once the price breaks out of the flag’s trendline, continuing in the direction of the initial trend. A breakout to the upside (in the case of a bullish flag) or downside (in the case of a bearish flag) signals the resumption of the prior trend. Types of Flags: 1. Bullish Flag: Occurs in a strong uptrend. After a sharp upward move (flagpole), the price consolidates in a downward-sloping channel (the flag). When the price breaks above the upper boundary of the flag, it signals a continuation of the uptrend. Example: o A stock experiences a rapid increase in price. o After the surge, the price starts to pull back slightly, forming a downward-sloping consolidation (the flag). o The price then breaks above the upper trendline of the flag, signaling the continuation of the upward movement. 2. Bearish Flag: Occurs in a strong downtrend. After a sharp downward move (flagpole), the price consolidates in an upward-sloping channel (the flag). When the price breaks below the lower boundary of the flag, it signals a continuation of the downtrend. Example: o A stock falls sharply. o After the decline, the price begins to move slightly upward, forming an upward-sloping consolidation (the flag). o The price then breaks below the lower trendline of the flag, signaling the continuation of the downward movement.
