Gamma Scalping: The Trader's Game of Volatility: part 1

1. What Problem Does Gamma Scalping Solve? Most traders are either: • Betting on price direction, or • Betting on volatility. Gamma scalping falls into the second category — it’s a strategy for making money from movement, not direction. If the price zig-zags, this strategy works beautifully. Think of it as surfing the waves of a stock’s movement using options. 2. The Foundation: What Is Delta and Gamma? Let’s define them simply: • Delta is like a car's speed. It tells you how fast the option is changing in value as the stock price moves. Example: If an option has a delta of 0.5, and the stock moves ₹1 up, the option’s value goes up by ₹0.50. • Gamma is like the car’s acceleration. It tells you how fast delta is changing when the stock price moves. If gamma is high, delta changes quickly. That’s important because gamma makes rebalancing profitable. 3. What Is Gamma Scalping Then? It’s a strategy to profit from this "delta change". You: • Start with a delta-neutral position (equal positive and negative deltas) • As the stock moves, your delta goes out of balance. • You buy or sell the stock to bring it back to neutral. • You repeat this scalping process every time the price moves. • Each time you do this, you lock in small profits, especially when price swings back and forth. 4. How a Trader Sets Up a Gamma Scalping Position Imagine a trader does this: • Buys 1 ATM Call • Buys 1 ATM Put (both expiring in 15 days) This is called a long straddle. It has: • Neutral Delta (because the call delta ≈ put delta in opposite directions) • Positive Gamma (because both options are ATM and responsive to price change) Now the trader watches the stock move. Let’s say: • Stock moves up → delta becomes positive → trader sells shares to balance • Stock moves down → delta becomes negative → trader buys shares At every bounce, he/she is selling high and buying low on the stock – that’s the scalp.
