Gamma Spikes and Their Impact in Intraday Option Moves

In the world of option Greeks, Gamma is often misunderstood or ignored by retail traders. Yet, when it comes to intraday option trading, especially on volatile days or around key breakout/breakdown levels, Gamma becomes a game-changer. It’s the Greek responsible for how quickly Delta changes, which in turn determines how responsive an option is to the underlying asset’s movement. In simpler words: Gamma is the accelerator of your option premium’s sensitivity. Let’s break this down. Suppose you’re holding a Call option with a Delta of 0.4. This means for every ₹1 move in the underlying, your option moves ₹0.40. But if that Call option has high Gamma, and the underlying makes a quick move, your Delta will start increasing rapidly—say from 0.4 to 0.55 or even 0.7. Now, the same ₹1 move could push your option up ₹0.70. That’s the Gamma spike, and it often explains why option premiums explode suddenly even without huge index movement. In intraday trading, this happens most frequently during breakout/breakdown scenarios, particularly in the last hour of the day or during events like RBI policy, US inflation data reaction, or unexpected sectoral movements. Gamma spikes amplify gains for option buyers only if they’re on the right side of the move. A 20-point move in Nifty can suddenly give a 100% return in OTM options simply because Delta jumped due to Gamma pressure. But Gamma is a double-edged sword. It also makes risk management tougher. Why? Because just as Delta can spike in your favor, it can also crash back instantly if the move fails or reverses. That’s why Gamma-rich options (like near-expiry, OTM contracts) are not suitable for weak conviction trades. You must be very clear about your entry zone, direction, and stop-loss.
