Indian Automobile Sector Report: March 13, 2025

Market Overview The Indian automobile sector has demonstrated resilience amid global economic fluctuations, with a notable emphasis on electric vehicles (EVs) and sport utility vehicles (SUVs). In 2024, the overall passenger vehicle market experienced a modest growth of 5%, while SUV sales surged by 14%, accounting for 56% of the car market, up from 51% the previous year. Electric Vehicle (EV) Developments Automakers in India are poised to introduce approximately a dozen new EV models in 2025, focusing on enhanced driving ranges and expedited charging capabilities. Despite a global deceleration in EV demand, India's EV market expanded by 20% in 2024, outpacing the overall car market's growth. Companies are set to showcase their latest EV offerings at the New Delhi Auto Show. Charging Infrastructure Initiatives To address consumer concerns regarding charging infrastructure, major automakers have announced plans to install fast-charging points across India's top 100 cities and are considering a battery rental service to reduce upfront costs for EV buyers. This initiative aims to bolster EV adoption by mitigating infrastructure and cost challenges. Pricing Strategies In response to escalating raw material and operational costs, leading automakers have implemented a price increase of up to 4% on their vehicles, effective January 2025. This marks the second price adjustment within a year, following a 0.45% hike in early 2024. Similarly, other manufacturers have announced price increments across various models, reflecting industry-wide efforts to maintain profitability amid rising expenses. Competitive Landscape and Future Outlook Automakers are strategizing to reclaim market share by launching new SUVs, including domestically manufactured EVs slated for release next year, along with additional gasoline-powered models. This initiative is part of a broader plan to balance market share and profit margins, focusing on higher-priced vehicles and EVs.
