Example Calculation: If a company has 50 crore outstanding shares and its stock is trading at ₹1,000 per share, then: 50,00,00,000 × 1,000 = ₹50,000Crore So, the company’s Market Cap is ₹50,000 Crore, making it a large-cap stock. 2. Market Cap & Stock Indices Stock market indices like NIFTY 50 and SENSEX include companies based on Market Cap: NIFTY 50 & SENSEX → Large-cap stocks. NIFTY Midcap 100 → Mid-cap stocks. NIFTY Smallcap 100 → Small-cap stocks. These indices help investors track the performance of different segments of the market. 3. Market Cap vs. Enterprise Value (EV) – What’s the Difference? Market Cap alone does not show a company’s true value. Enterprise Value (EV) is a better measure as it includes: EV = Market Cap + Debt - Cash & Cash Equivalents Example: Company A: Market Cap ₹10,000 Cr, Debt ₹5,000 Cr, Cash ₹1,000 Cr EV = 10,000 + 5,000 - 1,000 = ₹14,000 Cr Company B: Market Cap ₹10,000 Cr, No Debt EV = ₹10,000 Cr (Less risky) Investors should consider EV along with Market Cap for a better analysis of company value. 4. Real-World Example of Market Cap Impact Case Study: Reliance Industries In March 2020, during the COVID crash, Reliance’s Market Cap was ₹6.5 lakh crore.
