Punjab National Bank Recent Trends

Punjab National Bank (PNB) is one of India’s oldest and most established public sector banks, founded in 1894 and headquartered in New Delhi. It operates a vast network of over 12,000 branches and more than 13,000 ATMs across the country. Over the years, PNB has evolved from a traditional banking institution into a modern financial powerhouse, offering services in retail, corporate, agricultural, and international banking. PNB’s business model focuses on diversified income streams—spanning retail loans, MSME financing, housing finance, and corporate lending. The bank has also strengthened its digital footprint through platforms like PNB One, promoting convenience and customer engagement. It has been actively involved in government-led initiatives such as PM Mudra Yojana, Jan Dhan accounts, and MSME support schemes. Financially, PNB has been on a recovery trajectory post the merger with Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India. Asset quality has improved with the Gross NPA ratio declining significantly over recent years, driven by better recovery and resolution of bad loans. The bank continues to maintain a healthy provision coverage ratio, improving its balance sheet resilience. Profitability has strengthened with rising net interest income (NII) and improved cost-to-income ratio. PNB’s CASA deposits remain robust, reflecting customer trust and a strong deposit base. The focus on expanding retail and digital channels positions the bank well for future growth. However, being a PSU bank, challenges remain—such as exposure to stressed sectors, moderate return ratios compared to private peers, and sensitivity to interest rate cycles. In the medium to long term, PNB stands to benefit from India’s economic expansion, rising credit demand, and government support for the banking sector. For long-term investors, PNB offers potential for steady growth and valuation re-rating as asset quality continues to improve.
