PNB
Founded in 1894 and headquartered in New Delhi, Punjab National Bank (PNB) is one of India’s largest public sector banks, serving a broad range of retail, corporate, agricultural and international banking clients. The bank has a wide branch and ATM network across India, and has steadily expanded into international operations.
In its recent quarter (Q2 FY26), PNB reported a net profit of ₹4,904 crore, up about 14% year-on-year, reflecting improved asset quality and higher overall income. At the same time, however, net interest income (core lending income) saw a slight dip, indicating some pressure on traditional revenue sources. The bank is targeting loan and deposit growth, as well as aggressive bad-loan recovery.
Key strengths include its large scale, diversified business lines (retail, agriculture, corporate) and the government ownership which provides lender-of-last-resort support and credibility. Its wide network gives it reach into underserved rural and semi-urban markets which are expected to drive growth as India’s credit penetration increases. The focus on improving asset quality and provisioning (reducing the burden of bad loans) is timely, because banking stocks often get uplifted when NPA metrics improve materially.
However, PNB faces several risks. As a public sector bank, it carries the legacy of past bad loans and requires continued vigilance on credit underwriting across segments. The margin between what it earns on loans and what it pays on deposits (net interest margin) remains under pressure from competition, regulatory rates and cost of funds.
Valuation for PNB appears moderate relative to its peer group of large PSU banks, offering potential upside if its asset quality and credit growth accelerate. Investor returns will depend on execution—namely, successful loan growth across retail and SME segments, continued reduction in NPAs, and cost control.#WatchOutFor#FundamentalViews#Post-ClosingCommentary#HiddenGems#EquityResearch
