Risk Management Strategies Specific to Intraday Options

In intraday option trading, mastering risk management is what separates a consistently profitable trader from a gambler. The leverage available in options is both a blessing and a curse—it can amplify gains but can equally magnify losses within minutes. Therefore, implementing tailored risk management strategies is not optional; it's essential for survival and long-term success. First and foremost, every trade must begin with a predefined stop-loss—not just mentally, but one that is either executed through a stop-loss order or vigilantly monitored with discipline. Since options premiums can fluctuate drastically with small movements in the underlying index, it’s wise to set your stop-loss based on percentage loss in premium rather than points in the underlying. For example, if you're buying an option at ₹100, decide beforehand if your maximum pain is 25%, i.e., ₹75. This helps avoid emotional decisions when premiums start melting. Position sizing is another underrated yet powerful technique. A golden rule followed by many professional traders is to risk only 1-2% of your trading capital per trade. Even if you're highly confident in your analysis, the market can behave irrationally. Keeping the position size small ensures that no single bad trade wipes out your account. A strategy could work 60% of the time and still be highly profitable—if losses are capped and gains are allowed to run. Another pillar of intraday option trading is adjustment strategy. Let’s say you're bullish and have bought a call option. But the market turns sideways. Rather than sitting idle and watching Theta decay eat your premium, you could hedge by selling an OTM call and convert it into a bull call spread—this reduces potential loss by capturing some decay from the short leg.
