Time Decay Explained – How Theta Eats Your Premium in Intraday Option Trading

Time decay, represented by the Greek letter Theta, is one of the most important but often misunderstood concepts in option trading—especially in intraday setups. For option buyers, Theta works against you every minute you're in a trade. For sellers, it works in your favor. Understanding how Theta impacts your premium throughout the trading day can help you decide when to enter, when to avoid the market, and how long to hold your positions. Theta is the rate at which an option’s premium loses value with the passage of time, all else being equal. In simple terms, even if the market doesn't move, the value of an option drops just because time is passing. This effect is more severe for out-of-the-money options and increases as expiry approaches. For intraday traders, this means that if you're buying options, you need the market to move quickly in your favor—otherwise, time decay starts to erode your premium rapidly. One mistake many option buyers make is holding a trade too long waiting for a target. Even if the market reaches that level later in the day, the premium might not increase as expected due to time decay. That’s why it's often better to exit partially when in profit, or trail aggressively, instead of waiting for textbook targets that may not materialize. Theta is most brutal to OTM options and kindest to ITM options. This is why many intraday traders prefer ITM or ATM strikes—they have better delta and are less vulnerable to Theta decay in the early part of the day. Also, avoid holding trades post-2 PM unless you're trading a breakout or trending day, because Theta crush becomes faster in the last hour of the session. In short, as an intraday option buyer, you're trading against the clock. Your edge comes from price movement, not time. Always factor in Theta when planning entries, targets, and exits. The market may move slow, but Theta never sleeps. It keeps ticking, and if you don’t respect it, your profits will silently vanish.
