Trading Expiry Day Premium Decay with Theta Advantage

Expiry day in options trading, especially on Thursdays for Nifty and Bank Nifty weekly contracts, presents a unique landscape where time decay (Theta) becomes both a powerful enemy and an ally—depending on your positioning. While most traders get trapped chasing big moves, skilled intraday traders capitalize on the premium erosion that accelerates as the clock ticks. Understanding how to trade on expiry using Theta advantage can significantly boost intraday returns with relatively lower risk if timed well. On expiry day, out-of-the-money (OTM) options lose value rapidly, especially post 1:00 PM, when directional momentum dries out or index starts consolidating. Smart traders often look to short OTM options that are unlikely to come into the money, aiming to collect the remaining premium as profit. For example, if Nifty is trading at 22,000 and shows no sign of breakout, selling both 22,100 CE and 21,900 PE as a short strangle can work efficiently, provided the trader manages risk actively with stop-losses and adjusts positions based on delta movement. Another smart approach is directional premium decay trading—say you analyze that Bank Nifty has made a lower high and is likely to drift downward. Instead of buying a put, you could sell a far OTM call which has very low chances of being touched, and its premium will decay sharply even with mild sideways-to-downward price action. This method doesn’t need a huge move; time decay works in your favor as long as the price stays within the expected range. Volume, open interest buildup, and VWAP levels play a crucial role in expiry strategies. If a particular strike shows heavy call writing but price is unable to cross above, it indicates a strong resistance—ideal for selling calls. Similarly, put buildup below support zones shows where bulls are active. A range-bound expiry often gives scalpers multiple entries to sell options near the edges and square off near VWAP.
