Understanding Gamma and Its Intraday Influence
Gamma is one of the most powerful yet least understood Greeks in options trading, especially in the context of intraday strategies. For traders who prefer quick entries and exits, understanding Gamma is essential—it plays a silent but massive role in how fast an option’s delta changes, which in turn affects how quickly the option premium reacts to price movement in the underlying asset. To start, Gamma measures the rate of change of Delta with respect to the underlying’s price. In simpler terms, while Delta tells you how much the option premium will move when the stock moves ₹1, Gamma tells you how fast that Delta itself is changing. A high Gamma means that even a small movement in the stock can rapidly increase or decrease Delta, making the premium far more responsive. For intraday option buyers, this is crucial. Let’s say you're trading Bank Nifty and you’ve bought an at-the-money call option. If Gamma is high—which typically happens near expiry—then even a small upward move in Bank Nifty can sharply increase the Delta, causing the premium to accelerate faster than expected. That’s why many intraday traders notice sudden spikes in premium after a breakout—the Gamma effect is kicking in. High Gamma is like adding a turbocharger to your trade. If the price movement happens quickly in your favor, you’re rewarded generously because the premium doesn’t just increase linearly—it speeds up. But the flip side is just as dangerous: if the price retraces or fails to follow through, the premium can crash just as quickly because Delta loses its strength just as fast. This is especially prominent on expiry day, when Gamma is at its peak. On Thursdays, intraday traders often see wild swings in option prices with small moves in the index. This is because the options are near-zero Theta and high Gamma. Every tick in the underlying creates an outsized move in premium. It’s a double-edged sword—rewards are high, but risk is brutal if the move reverses.
