Cipla: Relative strength stands out in today's weak Nifty

Limited is one of the Nifty 50 stocks standing out on September 24 as the broader market came under heavy selling pressure. The Nifty 50 closed at 23,063.10, down 383.70 points or 1.64%, while the Sensex declined 1.67%. Banking, metals and auto stocks were among the major areas of weakness. Against this backdrop, Cipla finished among the Nifty's strongest performers, gaining around 1.16% to ₹1,399. This relative strength is important because the stock managed to remain positive despite a broad risk-off session. The question now is whether this strength can sustain beyond one session. From a fundamental perspective, Cipla's performance needs to be tracked through its India business, US generics, respiratory portfolio, product launches and margin trajectory. For a pharmaceutical company, regulatory developments and product-specific opportunities can also materially influence quarterly performance. From a technical perspective, ₹1,400 is now an important psychological level after today's close near that mark. A sustained move above ₹1,400 with improving volumes would provide stronger confirmation that buyers are defending the stock despite broader market weakness. On the downside, today's low becomes the first reference point. If the stock starts giving back today's gains while the Nifty remains weak, the relative-strength setup would need to be reassessed. Another factor worth watching is sector rotation. During today's session, Cipla, SBI Life, BEL and NTPC were among the Nifty names showing resilience, while financial stocks such as Bajaj Finance, HDFC Life and Axis Bank faced significant selling. In a market where the Nifty fell 1.64%, Cipla's positive close makes its relative strength worth monitoring.
