ICICI Bank: strong profit growth, but margins need watching

ICICI Bank Ltd reported a 20.1% YoY increase in Q2 FY27 net profit to ₹14,843 crore. Net interest income rose 17.7% YoY to ₹25,339 crore, showing continued strength in the bank's core lending business. The results look strong on the headline numbers, but there is an important detail investors should watch. Net interest margin declined to 4.18%. For a large private-sector bank, the direction of NIM is important because even strong loan growth can have a limited impact on earnings if the spread between lending yields and funding costs comes under pressure. The positive side is asset quality. Gross and net NPAs improved during the quarter, suggesting that the bank continues to maintain control over credit quality while expanding its business. For me, the next phase of the ICICI Bank story will depend on whether earnings growth can remain strong without further pressure on margins. The key numbers to track are: 1. Loan growth and deposit growth. 2. NIM trajectory and cost of deposits. 3. Credit costs and slippages. 4. Gross and net NPA trends. 5. Return on assets and return on equity. The stock has faced selling pressure after the results, despite the strong profit growth. This tells us that the market was looking beyond the headline earnings number. For traders, I would watch the post-result price action and volume before taking a directional view. For investors, the sustainability of NIM and asset quality will be more important than one quarter's profit growth. My view: The Q2 numbers are fundamentally encouraging, particularly the 20% profit growth and improvement in asset quality. The key question now is whether ICICI Bank can maintain this earnings momentum while protecting margins.
