gained 2.49 per cent to Rs 188.79 on Friday, September 4, 2026 — the second-biggest gainer among major stocks and the standout performer within the Nifty Metal index, which rose 1.07 per cent to close at 13,317.45, emerging as the best-performing sectoral index of the session.
Tata Steel Limited leading the metal sector on Friday extends a trend that has made Nifty Metal one of the more consistent sector-level stories of the past week. While the Nifty 50 lost 3.38 per cent over the past year, the Nifty Metal index has soared 38 per cent in the same period — one of the widest sector-versus-index divergences currently active on the Indian market.
Friday's metal sector strength was supported by two global catalysts. Chinese AI stocks rose sharply after OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra — which investors read as a positive signal for Chinese AI developer demand and, by extension, for Chinese industrial activity and steel consumption. Separately, easing US Treasury yields strengthened the case for a softer dollar, which historically supports commodity prices denominated in USD.
Within the Nifty Metal index on Friday, APL Apollo Tubes led with a 4.20 per cent gain, followed by Tata Steel at 2.49 per cent and Hindustan Zinc at 2.22 per cent. The index's 1.07 per cent gain on a day when the Nifty itself barely moved — up just 0.10 per cent — is a clean signal of sector-specific institutional buying rather than broad market participation.
The 52-week range for Tata Steel runs from Rs 121.50 to Rs 201.30.
