Coal India Signs MoU with ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel
$COALINDIA and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India signed a non-binding MoU on August 12, 2026, to explore syn-gas utilization from a proposed coal gasification facility at the AMNS Paradip Pellet Plant, incorporating CCUS technology. The agreement focuses on assessing technical, commercial, and implementation aspects, with both parties collaborating on a Preliminary Feasibility Report to determine overall project viability. The strategic alliance highlights a structural shift in how public and private mining and metals sectors collaborate to address energy transitions. By aiming to supply coal-derived syngas directly to ArcelorMittal's steel plants, Coal India is creating high-value downstream off-take. This framework could potentially establish a model for utilizing high-ash domestic coal clean-tech outputs, reducing the heavy reliance on imported gas.
