NHPC declares operation of Unit 5 at Subansiri Project

NHPC Limited (NSE: NHPC)

NHPC
declared commercial operation for Unit 5 (250 MW) on [CoD date] at its 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. Five of eight units are now live, taking operating capacity at the site to 1,250 MW, up from 1,000 MW. What happened: Unit 5 adds 250 MW of earning capacity. Unit 4, also 250 MW, was commissioned in May 2026. Three units totalling 750 MW are still pending. Why it matters: Once a unit is in commercial operation, it can start earning tariff revenue. Subansiri Lower is NHPC’s largest hydro project, so each unit adds a visible chunk to cash flow. Hydro also supplies peaking power, which helps the grid balance solar and wind output. My view: The project is now 62.5% operational (1,250 of 2,000 MW). Units have arrived in 250 MW steps, so the revenue base grows with each declaration. More capacity in the regulated asset base means more tariff income over time. The risks are real, though. River flow changes with the season, and delays in transmission or off-take readiness could push back the last three units. I read this as steady execution, not a one-off surprise. The remaining units matter more than this announcement. What I am watching: Commercial operation dates for the remaining 3 units (750 MW), and quarterly generation and power off-take numbers.
