Closing Bell: Sensex falls 388 pts, Nifty settles below 24,500; Realty, Metal drag, Pharma gains
Indian equity benchmarks closed lower on August 11, with the Sensex declining nearly 400 points and the Nifty50 finishing below the 24,500 mark. Weakness in realty, metal and other key sectors weighed on the market, while gains in pharma and IT provided some support. At the close, the Sensex dropped 388.19 points, or 0.49 per cent, to 78,154.25, while the Nifty50 declined 112.10 points, or 0.46 per cent, to 24,471.70. Sectoral performance remained mixed. The Nifty Pharma index emerged as the top performer, rising 1 per cent, while Nifty IT advanced 0.40 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty Realty, FMCG and Metal indices declined around 1 per cent each. Nifty Infrastructure slipped 0.89 per cent, Nifty Private Bank fell 0.68 per cent, Nifty Auto declined 0.57 per cent and Nifty Bank shed 0.56 per cent.
