Indices closed higher for the third straight session on April 21, driven by widespread buying across sectors. Optimism was fueled by reports of a second round of talks between the U.S. and Iran, raising hopes of easing geopolitical tensions. The broader markets also performed well, with the Nifty Midcap index gaining 0.5% and the smallcap index rising near 1%. Both Sensex and Nifty posted strong gains of nearly 1% on Tuesday, supported by easing oil prices and positive global cues. The Sensex surged 753 points (0.96%) to close at 79,273, while the Nifty 50 advanced 212 points to settle at 24,577. The rally added nearly Rs 3 lakh crore to the total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies, taking it close to Rs 469 lakh crore. The positive sentiment extended to broader indices, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 rising 0.9% and 0.5%, respectively. Among sectors, Nifty Realty and Nifty FMCG led the gains, each climbing more than 2%.
