GOLD INVESTORS, HERE’S AN IMPORTANT UPDATE!

SEBI has restricted fresh investments in Gold ETF Fund of Funds (FoFs). Around 17 mutual fund houses, including HDFC, ICICI Prudential, SBI and Kotak, have paused fresh investments in their Gold ETF FoF schemes, which invest in Gold ETFs. WHY THIS MOVE? India imports a significant portion of its gold requirements. This move may be aimed at curbing gold-related demand and easing pressure on the rupee. AN INTERESTING NUMBER Investors poured ₹4,451 crore into Gold ETFs in September alone! WHAT CAN INVESTORS STILL DO? The restriction applies to Gold ETF FoFs, not regular Gold ETFs. Investors can continue buying regular Gold ETFs through the stock exchange, subject to normal trading and market conditions. LEARNING OUTCOME Not all gold investment products are the same. Gold ETFs and Gold ETF FoFs have different investment structures. A restriction on fresh investments in FoFs does not automatically mean that direct investment in Gold ETFs is restricted. Investors should understand the product structure, risks, costs and applicable restrictions before making investment decisions. THE BIG QUESTION Will this move discourage gold investments, or will investors simply shift to other routes to gain exposure to gold? What’s your view? Share your thoughts in the comments!
