Fed Holds at 3.75-4%: Impact on Indian Banks

The US Fed kept its benchmark rate unchanged at 3.75%-4.00% on 28 Oct, as per media reports. The vote was 10-2, so the pause came with two dissents. It followed the 25 bps hike in September, which was the first increase since July 2023. A hold removes the immediate risk of a fresh hike, but forward guidance and the US 10-year yield, which was hovering near 5% before the decision, remain the key swing factors for India. For Indian banks, three channels are worth watching. First, foreign flows: private banks such as

HDFCBANK
, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank carry high FPI holdings and tend to react to changes in global risk appetite. Second, bond yields: firm US yields can keep Indian G-sec yields elevated, which matters for banks with larger treasury books, such as SBI and Bank of Baroda. Third, the rupee: currency stability influences RBI’s room on policy and margin expectations. Markets will likely digest the Fed chair’s press conference tone, and Nifty Bank’s reaction in tomorrow’s session is worth observing. Domestic credit growth, deposit costs and earnings continue to matter alongside global cues. A central bank “hold” is not the end of the story; guidance, yields and currency moves shape how global decisions reach Indian banking stocks.
