Coal India Shares Surge 4%, Top Nifty Gainer as West Asia Tensions Boost Coal Appeal
Shares of
COALINDIA
dia Ltd (CIL) jumped over 4% on Thursday, emerging as the top gainer on the Nifty index amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The rally reflects investor confidence in coal's role as a reliable domestic energy source amid global supply uncertainties.
The surge comes as the government assured readiness for any sharp rise in coal demand triggered by the crisis. Overall coal stocks nationwide stand at approximately 210 million tonnes—sufficient for about 88 days of consumption. This record-high inventory results from production and supply outpacing demand this year, with pithead stocks at CIL mines rising to 121.39 MT as of March 9, 2026.
Thermal power plants hold additional reserves of around 54 MT, covering nearly 24 days. The robust buffer underscores India's energy security, positioning CIL favorably as markets eye stable coal supplies over volatile global fuels.
