Gas Stocks Rally on Regulatory Optimism

Gas stocks experienced a surge of up to 5% in early trading on March 24, fueled by anticipation of favorable regulatory changes.

GAIL
and IGL led the gains. Brokerages like Morgan Stanley and CLSA are optimistic about the sector's prospects, with Morgan Stanley predicting gains for gas transporters and upstream producers, and CLSA highlighting potential operating expense relief for city gas distributors. The positive sentiment stems from upcoming regulatory discussions, including an open house meeting scheduled for mid-April, and proposed tariff changes by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB). Morgan Stanley's analysis suggests that while pipeline tariff increases may lead to higher costs for some end consumers, long-distance consumers could see reductions. Top beneficiaries of the regulatory shifts are expected to be GAIL, Oil India, and Reliance Industries.
