Global Steel Market Roils as Trump Announces 50% Tariffs

Shares of major Indian steel producers, including

eel,

L, experienced a significant downturn following an announcement by President Donald Trump that he intends to raise tariffs on imported steel to 50%, effective June 4. This move escalates global trade tensions and has sent ripples through the international steel market. Speaking at a rally at U.S. Steel in Pennsylvania on May 30, Trump declared his intention to double the existing 25% tariff on steel imports. The protectionist measure is aimed at bolstering the American domestic steel industry, which he claims has been unfairly impacted by foreign competition. The announcement also touched upon a pending agreement between Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel. While details of the deal remain unfinalized, Trump suggested it would guarantee "no layoffs and no outsourcing whatsoever," aiming to safeguard American jobs. The sharp increase in tariffs is expected to make Indian steel products significantly more expensive and less competitive in the U.S. market, a key export destination for India's metal sector. Analysts warn that this could lead to a surge of cheaper steel imports into alternative markets, including India, further pressuring domestic prices and margins. India has already signaled its intent to take action at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in response to these tariffs.
