Gold Loan Stocks Recover as RBI Governor Clarifies Policy Stance
Shares of gold loan providers like
MUTHOOTFIN
ance and
IIFL
nce saw a partial recovery on April 9th, following clarification from Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra regarding gold loan regulations.
Earlier in the day, concerns arose after reports suggested the RBI was planning to tighten gold loan norms. However, Governor Malhotra explicitly stated during a post-monetary policy press conference in Mumbai, "Have never said that gold loan norms will be tightened." He also mentioned that the guidelines for co-lending will now be extended to all regulated entities.
This clarification alleviated market fears, leading to a rebound in the affected stocks. Muthoot Finance, which had plummeted to its 10% lower circuit earlier in the day, significantly recovered, trading approximately 5% lower by mid-day. Similarly, IIFL Finance shares also regained substantial ground.
The volatility in these stocks highlights the market's sensitivity to regulatory announcements, particularly concerning the financial sector.
