ICICI Prudential Shares Soar on Q4FY25 Margin Surprise and Robust Protection Growth

I Prudential Life Insurance Company witnessed a significant 4% jump today, propelled by a positive surprise in its Q4FY25 margins and strong growth in its retail protection business. The company's earnings for the quarter ending March 31, 2025, surpassed analyst expectations, primarily driven by higher trailing sales and impressive performance in key operational metrics. For the fourth quarter of FY25, ICICI Prudential reported an Annualised Premium Equivalent (APE) of ₹3,502 crore and a Value of New Business (VNB) of ₹795 crore. Notably, the company's VNB margin improved to 22.7%. On a year-on-year basis, APE (Retail and Direct) grew by 3.1%, while VNB saw a rise of 2.5% compared to the March quarter of the previous year. A standout performer was the retail protection segment, which experienced a sharp 25% year-on-year jump, indicating a strong focus and success in this crucial area. The company's operational metrics remained healthy, with the 13th-month persistency ratio at a robust 89.1% and the 49th-month persistency ratio at 69.5%. Furthermore, ICICI Prudential demonstrated its commitment to customer service with a high claim settlement ratio of 99.3% and maintained a strong solvency ratio of 212.2%, significantly above the regulatory requirement of 150%. Looking at the full fiscal year FY25, ICICI Prudential's total premium income rose by 13.2% to ₹48,951 crore. The Retail Weighted Received Premium (RWRP) also showed strong growth of 15.2%, supported by robust performance across both the company's own channels and its partner networks. The positive market reaction today reflects investor confidence in ICICI Prudential's ability to deliver profitability and growth, particularly in the high-margin protection business. While some brokerages may have a mixed outlook, the overall sentiment appears to be buoyed by the better-than-expected margin performance and healthy operational metrics.
