Indian Auto Stocks Surge on Trump's Hint of Tariff Relief

Indian automotive stocks witnessed a significant rally on Tuesday, with shares of

MOTHERSON
a Motherson International, and Sona BLW Precision Forgings soaring between 5-6 percent. This surge follows a statement from a former US President indicating a potential exemption for the automotive sector currently facing high import tariffs in the United States. The statement alluded to assisting car companies transitioning their production back to the US from countries like Mexico and Canada. While specific details remain unclear, the comments have ignited speculation within the market regarding a possible reprieve from the existing 25 percent auto import tariffs imposed by the US. According to the statement, these companies are in the process of shifting towards using parts manufactured domestically but require some time for this transition. This suggests a potential window of relief for firms currently undergoing this shift. The positive sentiment extended beyond Indian shores, with Japanese automakers such as Toyota Motor, Honda Motor, and Suzuki Motor Corp also experiencing a surge in their stock prices. South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Corp followed suit. This broader rally comes after the aforementioned 25 percent levy on imported cars into the US was announced earlier this month, on April 2nd. Auto manufacturers emerged as the primary drivers of gains in Japan's wider Topix Index.
