Indian Stock Markets Take Christmas Break: BSE, NSE Closed Today, Eyes on Friday Rebound

In keeping with festive traditions, India's benchmark stock exchanges, the Bombay Stock Exchange (

BSE
) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), are observing a full shutdown today for Christmas, providing investors a mid-week respite amid year-end volatility. All trading segments—including equities, derivatives, social stock leagues (SLBs), currency and interest rate derivatives—will remain suspended for the day. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) joins the pause, with both morning and evening sessions in commodities halted until resumption. This comes after a subdued close on December 24, where the Sensex dipped 0.12% to 81,412.98 and the Nifty 50 edged down 0.15% to 24,646.50, reflecting cautious sentiment and thin volumes in the lead-up to the holiday. Global cues were mixed, with U.S. markets trimming gains on profit-booking, while Asian peers showed modest recoveries. Trading activity is slated to pick up on Friday, December 26, as markets gear up for the final trading week of 2025. Analysts anticipate potential bargain-hunting in IT and financials, buoyed by expectations of a soft landing in global economies and ongoing rate-cut cycles. However, lingering uncertainties around U.S. policy shifts under President Trump could cap upside. For now, the pause offers a timely breather, allowing participants to recharge ahead of what promises to be a pivotal close to the calendar year.
