PwC Submits Draft Report on IndusInd Bank's Derivatives Accounting, Forensic Probe Continues

INDUSINDBK
nd Bank is navigating the aftermath of accounting discrepancies within its forex derivatives portfolio. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has delivered a draft report detailing their accounting review, initiated after the bank revealed misstated derivative losses. This report strictly addresses accounting matters, avoiding assigning blame or outlining the timeline of errors. The bank is now reviewing PwC’s findings. Simultaneously, Grant Thornton Bharat is conducting a separate, crucial forensic investigation. This probe, mandated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), aims to uncover the root cause of the nearly ₹1,600 crore losses, pinpoint lapses in internal controls, and establish accountability. The RBI has emphasized the necessity of these investigations to understand if senior management had any involvement in the discrepancies. The RBI's involvement underscores the severity of the situation. They have directed IndusInd Bank's board to ensure accountability, especially after the bank's market value significantly declined in March. RBI officials, during a recent briefing, highlighted the importance of forensic audits and identifying responsible parties, whether internal staff or external entities. Deputy Governor J. Swaminathan stressed the need for decisive action against those found responsible. Governor Sanjay Malhotra, however, reassured the public of the overall stability and resilience of the Indian banking system. The PwC draft report and the ongoing forensic investigation are critical steps in resolving the issues at IndusInd Bank. The forensic investigation by Grant Thornton Bharat, in particular, will be instrumental in determining the extent of the lapses and identifying who should be held accountable, as per the RBI’s directives. The bank's response to these investigations will be closely watched by regulators and investors alike.
