RBI Boosts MFI Lenders: Bank Stocks Surge

Indian financial stocks, particularly those with significant microfinance (MFI) exposure, witnessed a surge on February 27th following the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) decision to revert risk weights on bank loans to NBFCs, including MFIs.

CREDITACC
Grameen led the charge, soaring over 15%, reaching an intraday high of Rs 997.4.
BANDHANBNK
also experienced a significant rally, climbing over 8% to Rs 146.38.   The RBI's move, lowering risk weights from 125% to 100% effective April 1st, is expected to reduce the cost of funds for these institutions, improving their profitability. This adjustment directly benefits lenders like Bandhan Bank and IndusInd Bank, which are anticipated to see improvements in their CET1 ratios.   Other beneficiaries included Cholamandalam Investment and Fin Co Ltd, which rose over 5%, and AU Small Finance Bank, which saw a nearly 5% increase. The broader Bank Nifty index also rebounded, driven by gains in major players like HDFC Bank and IndusInd Bank, effectively ending a four-day losing streak. This regulatory change signals a positive shift for the MFI sector, bolstering investor confidence and driving market activity.
