RBL Bank Soars on Emirates NBD's $3B Stake Acquisition; BNP Paribas Snaps Up 1.9% Stake Amid Frenzy

In a blockbuster development shaking up India's banking sector,

RBLBANK
Bank's shares rocketed to a five-year high on Monday, fueled by Dubai-based Emirates NBD Bank's board approval for a landmark $3 billion (₹26,850 crore) infusion to snag up to 60% equity stake in the private lender. The deal, hailed as the largest foreign direct investment in Indian financial services to date, triggered a mandatory open offer for an additional 26% from public shareholders, sparking investor euphoria and record trading volumes. RBL Bank's stock surged over 9% intraday, closing at ₹326.65—a 52-week peak that catapulted its market cap past ₹20,000 crore. The rally came hot on the heels of Emirates NBD's October 18 announcement, where it committed to acquiring 95.9 crore fresh shares at a preferential price of ₹280 each—a 6.5% discount to the prior close—via primary infusion. Post-deal, Emirates NBD will emerge as the promoter, securing board seats and merging its Indian operations into RBL, positioning the latter as its flagship subsidiary outside the UAE. Analysts at CLSA dubbed it a "landmark deal," projecting boosted net worth to $5.12 billion from $1.82 billion, with accelerated growth in retail lending, trade finance, and cross-border services. Emkay Global forecasts a 19% earnings uptick for FY27, while Nirmal Bang eyes NIM stabilization and branch expansion to 700+ outlets. Adding to the buzz, global heavyweight BNP Paribas Financial Markets jumped in with a savvy open-market buy, netting 1.18 crore shares—or 1.9% stake—for ₹377.35 crore at an average ₹317.85 per share. This move underscores mounting institutional confidence in RBL's turnaround post-regulatory hurdles, with foreign ownership set to dilute to around 11% initially before the open offer potentially caps it at 74% per RBI norms. Deal closure is eyed for April 2026, pending shareholder and RBI nods, with the first funding tranche expected in 5-7 months.
