SBI Shares Surge 3% After Completing Yes Bank Stake Sale to SMBC for Rs 8,889 Crore

nk of India (SBI) rallied over 3 percent on September 17, climbing to approximately Rs 857.40 per share, marking their third consecutive session of gains. The surge followed SBI's announcement of the successful completion of a 13.18 percent stake sale in Yes Bank to Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) for Rs 8,889 crore. SMBC's Strategic Investment in Yes Bank In a significant move, SMBC finalized its acquisition of a 20 percent stake in Yes Bank in May 2025, positioning itself as the private lender’s largest shareholder. This deal, one of the largest foreign investments in an Indian private bank, involved SMBC purchasing a 13.18 percent stake from SBI and an additional 7 percent from a consortium of Indian banks, including Axis Bank, Bandhan Bank, Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IDFC First Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank. These banks had initially invested in Yes Bank at Rs 10 per share during its reconstruction phase in 2020.
